A US military lab is overrun when the zombie test subjects take over the building. A crack team is sent in to clean it up, but when one of them is bitten he goes AWOL in an illegal strip club...
The one thing you should be able to guarantee in a horror comedy film about strippers is plenty of titillation. And while lots of flesh gets bared, it’s the lack of genuine laugh-out-loud gags that lets writer/director Jay Lee down.
Not that there aren’t plenty of wry moments amid the jet-black comedy. Lee based the film on the French existential play Rhinoceros by the Theatre of the Absurd’s Eugene Ionesco and enough of its biting satire rips through Zombie Strippers. How could it not in a film about characters who are used to fulfilling other people’s cravings for flesh suddenly developing a taste of their own?
Sadly, the not-at-all veiled jokes at the Bush administration’s expense are too obvious, although casting Roxy Saint of the Goth rock band Roxy Saint and the Blackouts as a death-embracing dancer borders on genius. In fact, when the girls start to give in to the zombie way to add some (seriously) killer moves to their stripping skills, the film starts to look like a Marilyn Manson video.
At least the extras have enough brains to feed a zombie horde, with a cast and director commentary, additional onscreen pop-up factoids, two behind the scenes featurettes, deleted scenes and additional content available over the internet using BD Live - all wrapped up in excellent, splatter-styled menus. VERDICT: 4/10
There’s plenty of gore to chew on, but the serious issues hinted at get lost somewhere in Jenna Jameson’s cleavage. Which, on a Friday night after a couple of beers, might not seem like a bad thing...
