This standalone follow up to the groundbreaking original invites you to explore a mysterious island...
Fast-paced, but with the chance to use strategy rather than brute force to defeat your foes, Crysis: Warhead pits you in the role of gruff British Sergeant Michael Sykes, aka Psycho. You are equipped with a nano suit that lets you become invisible, gives you great strength and increases your speed – essentially just like Predator!
The battles are fast and frantic, with firefights often reaching an almost euphoric sense of intensity as you take on the North Korean army by appropriating jeeps, trucks, hovercraft and – take cover bad guys! – tanks in order to win access to the next stage. And just when the game seems to be taking the shape of a Call of Duty-style shooter, the aliens break cover and launch their attack!
Crysis: Warhead is a beautiful game. The island location is stunningly authentic and neat touches give an authentic feeling of setting. A sequence in which you become involved gun battle in a frozen jungle sees the brittle ice shatter and explode as if it were taking place inside a recently shaken snow globe.
It’s not a long game (a multiplayer feature makes up for the brevity), but when you are dealing with this kind of intensity, less is most definitely more! Jonathan Wilkins
VERDICT: 9/10
Intense and fun. Plus there’s kick-ass multiplayer fun waiting for those going online.
