The further adventures of Stan, Kyle, Cartman and co…
Unlike The Simpsons or Futurama, South Park has never really taken a dip in quality, and Season 11 is another chuckle-crammed collection of episodes.
Creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have been canny enough to just tweak the formula enough to stop it becoming repetitive – the days of Kenny dying every single episode have gone – but they’ve kept the elements that have made the show so popular over the years (great characters, controversy-baiting subject matter, often bizarre pop culture references).
This box set contains all 14 episodes of the season, and insane highlights include the ‘Fantastic Easter Special’, in which Stan finds out a shocking secret about Easter (the episode manages to spin out an elaborate parody of The Da Vinci Code and still find time to include Jesus wielding the ninja star from Krull) and ‘Cartman Sucks’, which sees Cartman desperately attempting to retrieve a photo of his penis in Butters’ mouth while Butters is packed off to a camp to ‘cure’ him of being bi-curious.
The nice thing about South Park is that its movie parodies are spun out to truly bonkers extremes, rather than simply aping famous scenes – meaning that the 300 spoof ‘D-Yikes’, which centres around a lesbian bar being bought by Persians, is far funnier than Meet the Spartans (not that that’s saying much).
Judging by these episodes there’s a good few years left in South Park yet. James Skipp
VERDICT: 8/10
Nutty, profane and hilarious.
