The popular RPG comes to the PSP in a stunning, cinematic adventure…
After a slow start (the opening cinematics seem to drag on forever), the latest adventure in the groundbreaking series kicks into high gear. Providing enough of a challenge to those familiar with the series and offering a gentle learning curve to those who are using this version as an entry point, this is an excellent addition to the seemingly endless Final Fantasy saga.
The graphics are stunning - at times it feels next gen, going well beyond the modest abilities the handheld usually offers. The sound is vibrant and cinematic with pounding bass and a beautiful score that would be outstanding if it were placed on a movie. The story is fast moving and compelling with clearly defined missions – there is never any confusion as to what you’re doing, what you should be doing or why.
As with all RPGs the name of the game is to build your powers, and Crisis Core offers plenty of scope for self improvement. The greatest success of the game, however, is the voice acting. Long the bane of any video game, the performances here are uniformly strong, which does nothing but enhance an already exemplary gaming experience. Jonathan Wilkins
VERDICT: 9/10
Slow to start, but fantastic once it hits its stride.
