Kara kills Edward Teague, Lex blackmails Jimmy, Lois suggests Clark apply for a job at the Daily Planet, Clark doesn’t want to know. Clark refuses to believe Kara caused the plane crash, Clark lets Kara go. Kara reveals everything to Lex, Lex goes to find the Fortress. Clark finally wonders if he should do something…

The general reaction to the events in this episode is ‘so what?’. It feels like Smallville is just dragging things out because the premise of the series has nowhere else to go other than Clark becoming Superman – and it can’t do that. That said, there is just enough of an attempt to tie off some of the season’s plot threads and leave others hanging for the next season. Some characters are seen off and the final effects shot that many viewers have been waiting for is there in all its glory.

What it doesn’t do is provide much dramatic resolution or satisfaction for the viewer. It ends up being anti-climactic and, frustratingly, doesn’t really promise any new direction for the show either.

This whole season has been an attempt to go back and totally change the viewer’s insights into some of the major characters (and not in a good way), while others have been held in some sort of stasis. It’s not been a terribly entertaining journey, and this episode hardly whets the appetite for a further season. Very disappointing. Brigid Cherry
