Sapphire and Steel encounter an enemy who can make them doubt themselves...
This is one of the best Sapphire and Steel stories that Big Finish has done, which would have made an equally strong TV serial. Some recent stories have concentrated more on the people whose lives have been affected by Sapphire and Steel's presence than on the two lead characters, and it's only when two stories on the trot reverse that trend does the weakness of that approach become apparent.
That's not to decry the work of either of the "human" guest stars, whose reactions are credible within the fantastic elements of the story. The rebuilding of a family, and its subsequent forced breakdown isn’t overplayed as a subplot, but comes to the fore when necessary.
Steel seems even grumpier than usual – either caused by the effects of the previous story, or perhaps because subconsciously he realises that he has lived through some of the events before. Sapphire uncharacteristically makes an error, but when it turns out to be the right thing done for the wrong reasons, Steel's reaction is more human than we've seen before. Paul Simpson
VERDICT: 8/10
Lisa Bowerman oversees a production that hardly puts a foot wrong – highly recommended for fans of the TV series who may not have tried the audios.
