TV episode review
US airdate 8 May 2008 (The CW)
Sam thinks he may have found a way to save Dean. He has located a doctor who has discovered the elixir of life and he reckons this could be used to wangle Dean out of going to hell. Unfortunately, there is a terrible price to pay…
As the episode begins Sam and Dean are becoming increasingly irritated with each other over Dean’s encroaching deadline. They become distracted from the case, and argue, providing an ideal opportunity to exploit the relationship that showcases Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles skills as they convincingly act out the roles of bickering brothers. They seem so naturalistic together, and it’s a credit to the writers as well.
It’s all the more tense then that the arc story threatens to separate them. Just as a foretaste of what the world might be like if the worst happened, Sam gets left alone chasing the immortal doctor while Dean goes off to confront Bela. Needless to say, Dean’s attempt to retrieve the colt doesn’t go to plan and Sam finds himself in really dire straits. The series really knows how to milk the angst! Superb and engrossing.
