Teenager Kara zor-El is visited by her father’s spirit – who asks her to kill Superman…
Joe Kelly’s Identity is a series of loosely linked tales in which the young super-powered heroine struggles to figure who she really is.
The comic book almost starts off like Mean Girls, with the ultra short-skirted Kara zor-El (aka Supergirl) becoming involved with girls both bitchy and geeky, before going on to take in more traditional superhero stuff like saving the world. Along the way, Kara gets romantically involved with the obsessive Power Boy, meets her double, asks advice from Robin, joins the super-team The Outsiders and ka-pows a variety of bad guys.
Collecting together Supergirl issues 10 to 19 along with the DCU Infinite Holiday Special, Identity is a brightly coloured, fast-paced series of adventures that is sometimes a little difficult to follow. However, Supergirl herself (who speaks in contemporary teen vernacular) makes for an endearing heroine, and the strong characterisation glues this story together. James Skipp
VERDICT: 6/10
There are a few jarring changes in tone, but Identity is a fun teen-orientated collection of adventures.
