OK, so this episode doesn’t have the most original plot on the books – everyone but everyone has done a Groundhog Day scenario at some point (hell, the turgid Day Break based a whole show around the idea). But this being Supernatural, the imaginative writing team have created an innovative take on the idea. More importantly, it’s so darn funny you forget any quibbles about originality pretty quickly.
On paper, this looked like it could have been a stinker, but it’s actually a rather marvellous reverie on what Sam might become without Dean. The fact that the comedy is inter-cut with shocks and tragedy just adds to the magic. An emotionally satisfying rollercoaster of an episode. Brigid Cherry
