A new creative team get together to make what was once the ‘World’s Greatest Comic Magazine’ great again!
Never in all my days did I think I’d say these words: I’m actually buying, reading and enjoying the Fantastic Four again! Everyone loves the FF characters (well, except in the movies, maybe), but it’s been a while since the title has been an absolute must-read. But now, the comic has entered a bold new era, and we’ve got a pretty revolutionary new comic on our hands.
The new FF run comes from the creators of The Ultimates – and it is absolutely astonishing. Artist Bryan Hitch – once just an Alan Davis clone – has managed to top even his amazing work on The Ultimates, with an effortless, beautifully detailed, fluid style, which is utterly breathtaking. It’s also something brand new to look at – with the panels having no borders. It’s amazingly fresh.
Story and dialogue-wise, think Grant Morrison at his best. Mark Millar puts such life into his characters. And – get this – it’s accessible; you can pick an issue up and actually quite easily work out what’s going on. A rare thing in comics these days.
Yes, I’ve heard murmurings that some people think the story is a little slow – but c’mon, you just know it’s going to build and pay off. Long may the reign of these guys continue (if they can keep to the monthly schedule…). Martin Eden
VERDICT: 9/10
One word: Fantastic.
