A mission SG-1 don’t remember, a Stargate that won’t close and an impossible decision all spell trouble for Stargate Command…

The first in Big Finish’s series of Stargate audio dramas, this sensibly goes for a single voice rather than the traditional full cast drama. Having Michael Shanks as that voice pays dividends, as he sensibly opts to mimic his castmates’ vocal rhythms instead of their voices. The end result is that the story plays exactly as it’s meant to with Daniel recording his thoughts about events after the fact.

It also means that the story is a near perfect match to the feel of the show. There’s the same mix of banter and drama, the same massive concepts and casual, wry humour that made SG-1 such a success and, refreshingly, every character is given room to shine here, with O’Neill, Carter and Hammond getting some particularly fine moments.

A big idea presented in a small and at times surprisingly poignant way, this is smart, funny, big science fiction with a couple of genuine surprises thrown in for good measure. Alasdair Stuart

VERDICT: 8/10
If the rest of the series is this good, then Big Finish have something very special on their hands.
