Hunt, Drake and the team attempt to keep discontent over the Docklands development from spiralling out of control and also investigate the case of a prostitute who alleges she’s been raped…

After an ever-so-slightly awkward start, Ashes to Ashes has settled into a hugely enjoyable mix of detective drama, creepy mystery and nostalgia-soaked comedy. Hunt and Drake have developed an amusing rapport straight from the school of classic buddy-buddy comedies, and the rest of the team are no less involving. Over the course of these episodes, Ray gets to display his softer side and also become involved in a punch-up at a party, while the relationship between the ultra-likeable Chris and Shaz is developing in a low-key but rather sweet fashion.

As with Life on Mars, fads and fashions from the era (Breville sandwich toasters, garden gnomes, Charles & Di’s wedding) are skilfully woven into the story without feeling forced or over-the-top. Best of all is the visit to The Blitz Club, birthplace of the New Romantic movement, complete with a cameo from Steve Strange and the sight of Chris & Shaz dolled up in make-up and big hair. Plus, the soundtrack pleasingly features some less obvious choices from the era including The Ruts, Joe Jackson and er, Bucks Fizz.

Occasionally the crimes themselves feel a little incidental to the comedy in a way that didn’t really happen with Life on Mars, but it’s a small complaint when the episodes are this much fun. Full marks for the fantastic 80s cop show-style opening credits too. Matt McAllister
