A comprehensive episode guide and ‘making of’ companion to the last ever series of Stargate SG-1…

This is the sixth volume in the series of Titan Books Illustrated Companions: the sixth because the first eight seasons shared volumes in pairs, thus giving more space to the final two years of the series. Whether seasons 9 and 10 deserve more space should really be neither here nor there – but in retrospect it feels a bit unfair the best seasons of Stargate got slightly less attention. Ah, well…

This is the season that saw the Arthurian and Ori story arc come to a conclusion – that is, given the hanging threads to provide a reason for the straight-to-DVD movies, an almost complete conclusion. At the very least, then, this book will provide a neat reminder of the story so far for those awaiting The Ark of Truth.

The format of the book is the usual in-depth episode guide with plot synopsis and lot of production material. There are loads of photos (including a colour section) and production design sketches, together with interview material with key creative personnel and actors. The latter include costume supervisor Valerie Halverson, stunt co-ordinator Dan Shea and production designer James Robbins, as well as effects supervisors Wray Douglas and Michelle Comens.

This season also contained the hilarious self-referential 200th episode - aptly entitled 200, of course – and this gets its own in-depth section. There are lots of photos from this episode, including the memorable moments when the team became characters from Wizard of Oz, Farscape and Thunderbirds-style puppets! Brigid Cherry

VERDICT: 7/10
Does exactly what it says on the tin!
