Jim Caviezel will play the new Number Six in ITV's six-part miniseries reinvention of the classic 1960s TV series The Prisoner, set to air next year.

The star of The Passion of the Christ will battle against Sir Ian McKellen as Number Two, the interrogator trying to discover his secrets after he wakes up in a mysterious Village.

ITV is co-producing with the American AMC channel, whose president Christina Wayne noted that "There will be nods and winks and references back to the original, but I don't think that they'll feel in any way that their original has been tarnished. Even though this would fall under sci-fi traditionally, this is a drama at its core."

The script for the reimagined version is by Lark Rise to Candleford's Bill Gallagher, and will be directed by Jon Jones. McKellen described the script as "an enthralling commentary on modern culture. It is witty, intelligent and disturbing."
