At a panel at WonderCon, The X-Files creator Chris Carter assured the audience that he hadn't forgotten the 2012 date set for the invasion of Earth mentioned in the TV series.

"We want to be true to the series and the mythology," he commented. "But we want to make sure that we just do the best movies we can. And do what feels right like we've always done. I'd say that that 2012 date is certainly looming in our minds."

The X-Files 2 will be a stand-alone feature, reuniting Mulder and Scully. "It'll scare the pants off you," Carter promised.

Carter also confirmed that series composer Mark Snow would be scoring the film, and that Amanda Peet would be playing a Special Agent in Charge named Dakota Whitney. Scots actor Billy Connelly, who can be seen briefly in the teaser trailer with blood dripping out of his eyes, "plays a man with really long hair," Carter explained.

The untitled The X-Files sequel film opens in the US on July 25th.
