Battlestar Galactica fans will know Grace Park for playing the two Cylon characters Boomer and Athena in the hit sci-fi show. The actress recently attended a Q & A session at the Creation Entertainment Grand Slam Convention in Burbank, California. Abbie Bernstein was there to hear what she had to say…
Previous seasons have featured a lot of character introspection. This season seems like it’s more action plot-driven …
There’s very little time to have anything [not plot-arc-related] happening. Before, it was like, ooh, “Is Helo seeing any of the other Sharons?”
Is it harder to play Boomer or Athena?
I didn’t want to play Sharon at first – I tried out for Starbuck…She gets to kick so much butt! I didn’t know where they were going to go with Sharon. Sharon was harder – she was so conflicted in season two, it didn’t mesh with any acting style I’d learned.
Is it ever hard to keep track of which version of Sharon you’re playing in any given scene?
It was easier when Athena was on the planet pretending to be Boomer when she was in a barn or running through the woods. Boomer thought she was human, so she’d say, “Oh, my Gods.” Athena [knowing she’s a Cylon] would say, “Oh, my God.”…Sometimes they wouldn’t say whether it was Sharon or Athena, but you know she wouldn’t be hanging out with these characters [if she was the other character].
Can you tell us about any embarrassing moments you’ve had on set?
I know embarrassing moments for other people. Edward James Olmos [Adama] and Michael Hogan [Col. Tigh] were doing a real serious scene in Adama’s quarters and someone ripped a fart! They were the only guys who farted…It would be really gross if someone farted in the rebirth goo!
Who’s the most serious cast member and who’s the biggest practical joker?
I think almost everybody is a joker. Have you seen Michael Hogan? He’s so different from his character, it’s weird. People are in general really sweet. Katee cracks a lot of jokes and Michael is pretty hilarious. I don’t even know who’s the most serious – the director?
How did you feel about doing the half-naked ballet scene?
I don’t know ballet. No one on set knew how to do ballet. One of the extras showed me how to do it. I did it so poorly, so we said, "It’s some Cylon thing, it’s not really ballet!"Do you have a favourite character moment?
Jacking that cord into her arm and saving the ship was one of my favorite things to do.
In one word, what’s Helo and Sharon’s relationship?
Pure.
Do you think the fans will be happy with how Battlestar Galactica ultimately ends?
I don’t know. Do you guys think you’ll be happy with anything? This is Battlestar Galactica – a lot of people will die and there will be a lot of questions. But if you’ve liked it so far, you won’t be disappointed.
Will there be any more Battlestar Galactica after the series ends?
[Original Battlestar Galactica producer] Glen Larson has the film rights, so anything he did wouldn’t include these characters. We’re talked about it, and we’ve all pretty much said there isn’t going to be anything else after the last episode.
What about the conspiracy of Katee’s ‘non-leaving’?
It kind of all happened in one day. I heard the rumour. Everyone was giving her so much sympathy and Eddie comes by and says, “This is wrong, we’ve got to do something…” Then, within an hour, we found out it wasn’t true. But by then, we already had planned a dinner to say goodbye. They were even going to shoot the scene where she comes back in Los Angeles [to hide it from the Vancouver crew]. I wanted to say, “David Eick, we’re on the show. You can tell us – we’re not going to go online!”
Battlestar Galactica is currently airing on the Sci Fi Channel.
